Attention deficit disorder, commonly known as ADD (or ADHD - attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), is a condition wherein a person has difficulty focusing, concentrating, and paying attention to something. As such, it often causes troubles in school, work, or within relationships. If your child has ADD, then it's important that you make an active and constant effort to help your child.
See the positive side of ADD.
Many people believe that ADD is a negative thing and that it signifies the inability or disability of a person. But oftentimes, it helps to have a positive attitude toward the situation and be optimistic about your child and how you can help.
Get a diagnosis from a doctor.
Some parents mistakenly think that their child suffers from ADD and so they try to deal with the problem themselves, not realizing that the child may not even have the condition at all but this can be a manifestation of a simpler conflict. Before you do anything to "treat" your child, visit the doctor and get an actual diagnosis. From there, you can talk to your doctor, ask all of the questions you have, and work out a plan of action.
Understand your role as a parent.
When it comes to helping your child through ADD, it will take a lot of understanding, patience, care, and optimism on your part. Talk to your child's teachers and make them aware of the problem, ask your doctor what you need to do day in and day out, and take time to always talk to your child and form a strong relationship together. Sometimes, a strong and loving relationship is all a child needs to deal with ADD.
